Animals have long been part of the art story. They’ve been portrayed in religious rituals, as mythical creatures, incarnations of gods and goddesses, symbolically in Christian art or simply as pets. Some of the earliest images known are of animals on the walls of caves more than 40,000 years ago.  

Menagerie: All Creatures Great and Small art exhibit features works by contemporary artists that create real and imaginary animals through sculpture, painting, and drawings.

Remembering Mexico:

Mexican Consulate Debuts New Art Exhibitions to Mark Multiple Historic Commemorations

The Mexican Consulate in Oxnard Consulado de México en Oxnard with support from the Port of Hueneme and the Oxnard Performing Arts Center Corporation (OPAC), will celebrate numerous historical commemorations, including Mexican Independence Day, with the opening of two art exhibitions. 

 

Twenty twenty-one marks the Bicentennial of the Consummation of Mexican Independence and 500 years of the historical Memory of Tenochtitlan, the fall of the Aztec empire. On Sept. 15, 2021, the Consulate of Mexico in Oxnard presents two exhibitions of Mexican art that celebrate the past and connect us to the present with contemporary work. One exhibit brings visitors closer to the giants of mid-20th century Mexican Art, including Leopoldo Mendez, Rufino Tamayo, Clemente Orozco, Francisco Toledo, Jose luis Cuevas, Fanny Rabel, and others through the incredible Mexican Print Collection of Gil García and Marti Correa de García from Santa Barbara, California.

 

The Mexican Print Collection was curated by renowned Mexican artist Rafael Perea de la Cabada, who will also be exhibiting his own work in a show called, Cempohualli, an Aztec term for the number 20. There are 20 pieces of Perea’s artwork in the exhibition which explore themes of contemporary Mexican-American culture. Now a resident of Ventura, California, Perea will have a simultaneous exhibition of his series Aguipiente y Serguila / Un México Para Armar at Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (Mexico), celebrating its 45th anniversary.

COLLAGE + WORKS ON PAPER

OXNARD TEENS! Enjoy an artsy Summer on us!

In this class we explore Collage (a composition made of various materials such as paper, cloth, or wood glued on a surface) and works on paper. Through different mediums, we’ll explore  the elements of art (line, shape, form, space, value, texture, and color) and  expand our creativity through the playful use of collage and mixed-media techniques.

Students are encouraged to use their sketchbook to form a habitual practice for idea exploration. ​

Space is VERY limited and is on a scholarship basis for ages 13-17 / Grades 8-12.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Award-winning artist Rafael Perea de la Cabada was born in Mexico City and has lived in California since 1987.

Perea received a degree from the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Printmaking in Mexico City and went on to earn his M.F.A. from the University of California, Santa Barbara.  He has exhibited at many galleries and museums in Southern California including the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the Contemporary Arts Forum, The Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena, and the Hunsaker-Schlesinger Gallery in Santa Monica.  He has also shown in New York, Washington, Tennessee, Texas, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Croatia, Spain, and Germany.
His work is included in numerous public and private collections in Mexico, Switzerland, Ireland, France, Germany, and the United States.

Rafael teaches Drawing in the Fine Arts Department at Santa Barbara City College and has served as a Master Artist for mentorship programs, master classes, and mural projects for both the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and The Arts Fund. 

He recently completed an important Public Art Commission with designer Richard Irvine on the West Beach Pedestrian Improvement Project for the City of Santa Barbara, and is the Founding Art Director for The Animal Museum in Los Angeles.

Santa Paula Art Museum

Young Artist Program 

Calling all young artists!!! The Santa Paula Art Museum is looking for young artists who would like to join us for a FREE, 12-part class series to explore their talents, develop their artistic voice, and embrace their creative expression. During the course, students will work alongside professional artist Rafael Perea de la Cabada to practice skills, discuss ideas, learn about a variety of artists and their personal journeys, and ultimately develop and produce their own work of art. Students’ final works will be celebrated and shared with their community as a public artwork featured on display at the Santa Paula Art Museum.

This free program is available to teens ages 12 to 17. The course is limited to 10 students, chosen by lottery. Interested students are invited to submit an application to enter the drawing for a space in the class. Submit your application online here: https://airtable.com/shrCAC0iBQPidLXUG. The Young Artist Program will meet on Friday afternoons, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. beginning on May 28, 2021. There will be 12 sessions total. Once the cohort is selected we will do our best to accommodate individual needs to determine the final schedule including a summer break. All materials and light refreshments will be provided during each session.
