The Santa Barbara County Office of Arts and Culture is pleased to announce Wit and Whimsy: Selections from the Collection of Michael and Nancy Gifford, a new multimedia exhibition showcasing works by local artists. The exhibition is on view until spring 2020.(Note: Nancy Gifford’s large-scale piece, LAMENT, is now on permanent view at the Santa Barbara Public Library Central Branch.)

The public is invited to an opening reception during the November 1st Thursday Art Walk from 5-8 p.m.Thursday,November7at the Channing Peake Gallery located in the County Administration Buildingat 105 E. Anapamu Street in Santa Barbara.

In 2018, Michael and Nancy Gifford donated almost 300 pieces by local artists to the County. Wit and Whimsy: Selections from the Collection of Michael and Nancy Gifford an inaugural exploration of the recently acquired collection, acting as a springboard for future projects and exhibitions countywide. This public debut highlights the talent and diversity of artists living and practicing in Santa Barbara County.

Artist and long-time County Art in Public Places Committee member Cynthia Martin and County Office of Arts and Culture Curator Julia Rutherford Daly served as co-curators of the exhibition that was produced by the Santa Barbara County Arts Commission

OPENING RECEPTION: 1st THURSDAY, DECEMBER 5th | FROM 5-8pm
It’s that time of year again! Sullivan Goss is pleased to announce the ELEVENTH annual 100 GRAND exhibition. Featuring 102 quality works of art for $1,000 or less, the exhibition has become an incubator of emerging talent, an entryway for beginning collectors, a holiday celebration in the art community, and an ever timely reminder that everyone’s life is improved by the addition of original works of art.

The exhibition opens on 1st Thursday in December (12/5). Last year, over a thousand people attended over the course of the evening. December’s 1st Thursday at Sullivan Goss has become one of the area’s must-attend events of the year– a chance for artists and collectors to get together, network, and celebrate the accomplishments of another year in art.
100 GRAND will feature paintings, drawings, photographs, assemblage and sculpture by emerging and established artists that are priced to sell and sized (for the most part) to fit into smaller spaces. For this year’s exhibition, Contemporary Curator Susan Bush was able to secure work from many of last year’s best-selling artists, but there are more than a dozen new artists who have never before shown with Sullivan Goss.

Often, the gallery will use the 100 GRAND exhibition as a proving ground to see what new ideas, aesthetics, materials, or artists will find an audience. With 100 GRAND, new and younger collectors can begin to acquire and learn about original art from a serious gallery at an affordable price. With emerging artists, collectors get an opportunity to “get in on the ground floor.” For the gallery’s regular roster of successful, mid-career artists, collectors get an opportunity to buy works below market rate. For these reasons, sales are usually brisk. Since its first come first serve, buyers are encouraged to arrive early and to act fast.
Works will be for sale in advance of the reception, starting on Monday, December 2nd at 9am.

La UAM abre la muestra Aguipiente y Serguila y los festejos por su 45 aniversario

La exposición itinerante recorrerá las cinco unidades académicas de esta casa de estudios

La muestra itinerante Aguipiente y Serguila, un México para armar –inaugurada hoy– abrió un diálogo estético entre el arte, la historia y el presente a través del color y el trazo, y marcó el inicio de los festejos conmemorativos por los 45 años de la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM).

La exposición, con obra del maestro Rafael Perea de la Cabada (Ciudad de México, 1961), propone desde su título un juego de palabras “que hace referencia al mito fundacional de nuestro país y nos invita a reflexionar a partir de entregarnos al arte, que es tan importante en nuestras vidas”, sostuvo el doctor Eduardo Peñalosa Castro, rector general de la Institución.

Además de que fue abierta en una fecha significativa: la conmemoración del quinto aniversario de la desaparición de los 43 normalistas de Ayotzinapa, añadió.

Acompañado por el maestro Federico Bañuelos, coordinador de Extensión Universitaria, el doctor Rodrigo Díaz Cruz, rector de la Unidad Iztapalapa, aseguró que se trata de “una exhibición que nos invita a pensar en nuestro pasado, presente y futuro, a partir de la imagen simbólica del águila y la serpiente”.

El maestro Eduardo Isaac Egurrola, curador de la exposición, destacó que el objetivo es ofrecer a la comunidad de la UAM un motivo para reflexionar y, al mismo tiempo, para gozar a partir de un vínculo con el arte.

“A 45 años de contar con la UAM tenemos que celebrar que estamos en un país donde podemos ver con optimismo la posibilidad de armar y rearmarlo porque somos educadores y la mejor forma es que los jóvenes tengan un futuro”.

Las instituciones de educación superior son el pilar de este país, de ahí que se tiene que pensar en proyectos de colaboración en torno a los grandes problemas que enfrenta México para que todo el potencial y el valor científico y cultural de instituciones como la UAM se expresen con fuerza.

El artista Rafael Perea de la Cabada, quien lleva más de dos décadas en Estados Unidos, dijo sentirse contento y agradecido de regresar a exponer en su país “para plasmar artística y visualmente nuestra identidad y una nueva mexicanidad caracterizada por unamezcla de razas, puntos de vista, polaridades, diferencias internas y aceptación”.

Avecindado en Santa Bárbara, California, cuenta con una fructífera trayectoria como artista plástico en la que destacan numerosas expresiones artísticas como la pintura, el grabado, la escultura, la instalación, la escenografía teatral, el arte público y la curaduría.

La exposición inicia con la obra plástica Nueva Mexicanidad, en la que combina diferentes técnicas para continuar con la serie de dibujos Aguipiente y la Serguila, en los que plasma avances, retrocesos y fuerza espiritual de los mexicanos.

Prosigue con la instalación Los que nos faltan, que aborda el respeto a la vida, a la existencia y el requisito indispensable de la inclusión de todos los mexicanos; la pintura Un México para armar, representado por una mujer fecunda y bella dispuesta a darle vida a la nación reconstruida, y cierra nuevamente con el punto de partida, la Nueva mexicanidad, como materialización de una obra colectiva.

Con la colaboración del Taller Vida y Arte, la exposición visitará de manera alterna las cinco unidades de la UAM –Azcapotzalco, Cuajimalpa, Iztapalapa, Xochimilco y Lerma–, con el objetivo de ponerla al alcance de toda la comunidad.

Aguipiente y Serguila, un México para armar se exhibirá hasta el viernes 22 de noviembre en la Galería de Arte Iztapalapa, ubicada en Avenida San Rafael Atlixco 186, colonia Vicentina.

Concepts range the gamut of human experience, from humorous and playful to social and political discourse. Perea states, “Art for me has a transformative power, a delicate volatility that triggers our craving for a deeper perceptual level. I find art making an endless mystery, a choice and a calling.” Perea received a degree from the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Printmaking in his native Mexico City before earning his M.F.A. from UCSB. His broad range of expression includes painting, printmaking, mixed media, installation, public art and sculpture. With a foundation in Mexican modernism, he pursues his work as “a seamless merging of the mental/emotional intent, [where] the physical process and craft converge.” He shares his vast knowledge as a professor of drawing and painting at Santa Barbara City College. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is included in numerous prestigious public and private collections.
