Rafael Perea’s Double Landing
Camarillo, Calif., September 4, 2026 – CSUCI’s Department of Art and Art History announces the first exhibition of the new academic year. The Napa Hall Gallery will host “Double Landing,” a solo exhibition featuring the work of critically-acclaimed artist Rafael Perea de la Cabada. Featuring dozens of original artworks, the exhibition highlights Perea’s unique creative approach and the wide-ranging media he employs in his practice.
“Double Landing” opens Monday, September 14th, with a free public reception being held Thursday September 17th, from 5 to 7 p.m. All members of the campus and the surrounding community are invited, and the artist will be in attendance. The exhibition runs through October 23rd, and the gallery is open Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The public is also invited to hear Perea discuss his work at an artist’s talk to be held in the gallery on October 20th, from 6 to 7 p.m.
Born in Mexico City, Perea is an award-winning artist who earned his BFA from the National School of Painting, Sculpture, and Printmaking (Mexico City), and later completed his MFA at
the University of California, Santa Barbara. “Double Landing” presents a diverse collection of work shaped by experimentation, keen observation, and the interplay of construction and
continual revision. While the diversity of work on view might initially suggest the exhibition is a retrospective, instead it shows the varied terrain Perea simultaneously inhabits in his prodigious
practice. His inquisitive and playfully introspective nature comes through in expressive paintings, charcoal drawings, assemblages, and ceramics.
As the title suggests, the works on view in “Double Landing” never seem to quite settle into a fixed form—instead they are animated through layers of gesture and movement. “At times Rafael’s processes and his materials defy easy delineation,” says Luke Matjas, Professor of Art and Director of the Napa Hall Art Gallery. “Drawings act like paintings, paintings become richly
layered and sculptural, and sculptures act like drawings in three-dimensional space. At it’s core, Rafael’s work is very performative.”
Perea’s work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums across Southern California, including the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Contemporary Arts Forum, Westmont Ridley-Tree Museum of Art, and the The Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena. Additionally, he has shown his work in New York, Washington, Tennessee, Texas, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Croatia, Spain, and Germany. His work was also featured in the recent Tijuana International Triennial at the Centro Cultural Tijuana.
The Napa Hall Gallery is located on the CSUCI campus at the entrance to Napa Hall, near the corner of Santa Barbara Avenue and Ventura Street. Visitors can park (Select stalls are free for 30 minutes or $6 for a general permit) in the Round Mountain Parking Lot.
COMUNICADO DE PRENSA

Rafael Perea’s Double Landing
